Dice Golf rules
Eighteen procedurally generated holes per seeded round, with a course name and a round par between 70 and 74.
Clubs
Distance = the dice roll, adjusted by your lie's modifier below.
| Club | Dice | Allowed from |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | 2d6 | Tee, Fairway |
| Iron | 1d6 | Any lie |
| Putter | 1d3 | Green, Fringe, Fairway, Tee |
Lie modifiers
Distance = roll + the lie's modifier below (minimum 1, except a failed bunker escape — see below).
| Lie | Modifier |
|---|---|
| Tee, Fairway | +1 |
| Green, Fringe, Long grass, Cart path | as rolled |
| Rough | −1 |
| Sand | −2 |
Putting
From a Green lie, if the cup lies on your chosen line within the rolled distance, the ball holes out — you don't have to land exactly on the cup cell first.
Bunker escape
Rolling under 4 (total, before the sand penalty) from Sand fails to escape — the ball stays put ("Stuck!") and the stroke still counts.
Mulligan
Once per round, after seeing a roll you don't like, replay the same club for a fresh roll at no extra stroke.
Out of bounds
A ray that leaves the grid drops the ball on the last in-bounds cell of that ray and adds a 1-stroke penalty; such directions are still offered, they're just marked.
Hazards and hop terrain
- Water: a 1-stroke penalty, and the ball returns to where the stroke started.
- Cart path: landing on one bounces the ball one more cell in the same direction, up to 3 times, as long as each bounce stays in bounds and off a tree.
- Trees: a shot aimed into a tree hits it and stops on the last clear cell before the tree, with no extra penalty (no cart-path bounce or wind after, though a slope still slides it). Only a tree right next to the ball blocks that direction, since the ball couldn't move.
- Long grass / fringe: cosmetic variants of rough/green-adjacent ground with no distance penalty of their own.
Wind and slopes
Roughly 60% of holes carry a wind direction (shown as a windsock); after everything else resolves, a shot not played from the green shifts one cell further in the wind's direction if that cell is in bounds and tree-free. Some fairways carry slope patches; landing on one slides the ball one more cell downhill, same conditions.
The round and scoring
The scorecard shows the front nine, back nine, total, and Stableford points (albatross 5, eagle 4, birdie 3, par 2, bogey 1, worse 0).
Formats
- Stroke play: total strokes vs. par, shown running in the header and on the final scorecard.
- Handicap (Settings, 0–36): the scorecard also shows your net score alongside gross.
- Match play vs. a friend: "Share" or "Copy link" after finishing a round appends your 18 holes' scores to the link; whoever opens it plays the same course with your scorecard shown alongside theirs.
- Match play vs. AI: turn on "Play vs. AI" in Settings before starting a course; the computer plays the same seed hole by hole right after you finish each hole.
Night mode
A moon/sun icon toggle switches to a dark palette. Purely visual — it changes nothing about play.
Mobile and install
On a phone or touch device, aiming works by tapping a glowing cell then tapping it again to confirm, with a "Hit" button as an easier alternative to the second tap. Dice Golf is an installable, offline-capable PWA — install it for its own icon and no browser chrome, and keep playing without a connection.
